“The Sun, the Moon, the Earth and its contents are material to form greater things, that is, ethereal things - greater things than the Creator himself has made” - John Keats, 1817

KOSMICA: Ethereal Things is a weekend of events exploring our intimate human connection with particle physics and the physics of the universe. Experience impossible situations, encounter the mysterious realm of subatomic physics, and unravel the cosmic web through experiments, performances, music and poetics.

PROGRAMME

SATURDAY 14 APRIL

TOUR

5:30 - 6:30pm, Galleries

Artist’s tour of Material Sight

Immerse yourself in the sounds and sights of the vast, astonishing spaces where scientists investigate the universe. Artist Fiona Crisp guides you through her exhibition Material Sight.

Doors/bar open 6:30pm. Event 7-9:30pm, Riverside Rooms

£6/£4 unwaged

Join us for a special evening of performance, film, talks and music that aims to make the physics of the universe intimate and inspiring. With artists Annie Carpenter and Aoife van Linden Tol, film-makers Semiconductor, dark matter physicist Chamkaur Ghag, cosmologist Richard Bower, and Newcastle band Spacegong. Spectacular cosmological visuals provided by the Institute for Computational Cosmology, Durham University.

SUNDAY 15 APRIL

Drop-in Activities

2-5pm, Riverside Rooms

Free, no booking necessary, just pop in!

Artists and scientists will be in the Riverside Rooms with activities to satisfy your cosmic curiosity. Drop in to make artworks inspired by the physics of the universe with artist Helen Schell, create a DIY black hole singularity with artist Annie Carpenter, and learn about cosmic structure through origami with cosmologist Mark Neyrinck, and experience cosmic visualisations with scientists from Durham University.

Nahum – Voyage: An encounter with a Neutrino (A Hypnosis Performance)

5-6pm, The Pod

£6/£4 unwaged

More info & booking

The neutrino is among the elusive of particles, a subatomic wisp so ephemeral it zips through the planet rarely leaving a trace. Despite its extraordinary abundance - billions pass through your body every second - this ghostly particle is notoriously difficult to detect.

Voyage: An encounter with a neutrino is a project by artist Nahum that explores the possibility of having a personal, intimate encounter with a fundamental particle, and sensing your deep connection to our planet, our Sun, and to the solar system in which we live, achieving something that physicists build vast underground detectors to realise.

KOSMICA: Ethereal Things accompanies Fiona Crisp’s exhibition Material Sight. It is a partnership between Arts Catalyst, the KOSMICA Institute, Fiona Crisp (Northumbria University), and NGCA, supported by Durham University and Boulby Underground Laboratory.
